About Us

The Swiss Union of Jewish Students (SUJS) was founded in 1948 in Zurich. After many ups and downs, SUJS finally got established and today plays an important role in the lives of young Jewish adults in Switzerland.

SUJS is an independent umbrella organization and represents close to 1000 Jewish students in Switzerland, reaching from the ages 18 to 32.

Even though the name of our organization implies that we are a union of students, let us tell you that it does not matter (to us) if you study or not. Our task is to gather all young Jewish adults, no matter what they are doing in their daily lives.

SUJS speaks up for the interests of its participants within the national context and therefore acts within a cultural, political and social agenda.

The main objectives of SUJS are:

  • To strengthen the local student unions. SUJS does this through active support of the organized events, be it in a financial or structural manner.
  • To strengthen the ties of solidarity among Jewish students in Switzerland.
  • To provide a functioning network, through which Jewish students can inform themselves about upcoming events within and outside Switzerland.
  • To represent the Swiss Jewish students before all umbrella organizations; both Jewish (SIG, Bnei Brith, Keren Hayessod …) and non-Jewish organizations (government, student unions …).
  • To represent the Swiss Jewish students before their umbrella organizations EUJS and WUJS, so that the voice of the members of SUJS can be heard across the Jewish student world.

In all its activities, SUJS’ primary goals are to:

  • Promote a Jewish-Swiss identity.
  • Encourage the learning of Judaism and to promote the study of Jewish culture.
  • Fight racism, Antisemitism, Islamophobia and xenophobia as well as other forms of discrimination.
  • Promote dialogue and interfaith exchange in Switzerland.
